Going Beyond The Curriculum

This picure was intended to make the students laugh but the motto of our school in the background is an important reminder. How can we use what we learn at school to serve our community?
I attended a webinar today. The speaker encouraged the teachers in our group to take students beyond the curriculum. She said that we should help the students to apply what they are learning in a way that makes a difference in the real world. Wow. I’m not sure how to do that!
Right now we are studying alternative energy resources. How could we apply what we are learning and really make a difference? Let’s brainstorm some ideas…

We think that at school we learn to be responsible and respectful, we can do the same in the community.
If our students know enough about energy we could help the comunity by createing safer, renewable source of energy.
We can start to tell people to try to use more renewable resources througout the day. Try to cut down on the fossil fuels you use to cut down on pollution and make the world cleaner. We can start to tell people in sunny areas to start to use more solar energy. That is the equivilent to fossil fules but without the harmful fumes. Finally, install windmills in windy areas to start to conserve fossil fuels and make energy.
You could use power from the wind to transfer energy to a house. Wind is a useful way to conserve energy. Thick walls and large windows facing south work to transfer solar energy to your home. At night, since the walls are thick they trap the hot air and doesn’t let thermal energy flow to outside.
You could clean out a creek because some people use the water to produce energy for their homes.
I think we should educate little elementary school kids about energy.
In order to help out our community including energy resources we could put information brochures on how to save energy on peoples doors.
